Walk by Faith. Walk by Moriah.

We often wondered the existence of God.

How spiritual are we?

How can our emotions linked to our spirituality?

Why is it that positive people have the most fruits and happiness? While the opposite lives on angst and depression?

Why does our decision and judgement affects not only our lives but also of others?

Why do our lives intertwine?

Like a child, we asked humongous questions until we see ourselves in that breaking-free ultimate question,

WHAT IS OUR PURPOSE?

At first, I thought of correlating faith with Maslow’s Hierarchy of needs. And that religion will only play role on a person’s love and belonging, self-esteem, and self-actualization phases of life. Until I proven myself wrong.

In this walk of journey I’ve seen a lot of wealthy, career, and successful business people who still feels empty. Some achieved success in their younger years; while others passed their mid-life and still on ‘catch 22’ in building their dreams. While the irony of all is that people living below the middle-class possess more happiness. They are more grateful for small gestures that they receive.

One thing we can’t deny is the linkage of spirituality to God’s existence. Happy people at most keep constantly thanking God for all the blessing He bestowed upon them. While struggling people still awaits for their experience with God. Waiting that God will awe them in wonders. While others does not believe in God’s existence.

Interestingly, Pew Research Center on Religion reported approximately 84% of the world’s population in 2010 believes in God based on their religious affiliations. The remaining population on the other hand have either neglect the idea that there is God and others have decided to abandon the notion and turn up to irreligion.

One admiration I have for Singapore is the freedom to express religion or faith due to its cultural diversity. Here in Singapore the common religions are: Christians, Muslim, Hindu, and Buddhist. On another perspective it attracts the foreigners – immigrants mentality to move to a country where their religion is openly spoken. It gives them the sense of belonging.

I started attending Moriah Assembly of God (one of the Christian churches of Singapore) early 2012 while me and husband were still dating. A small community of Christians where the walk of faith is rather intimate. The community knows each other and the essence of  caregroups give more intimacy to the faith. My husband and I believes we all belong to a church. It’s just a matter of time to find your church. And we both felt it; we both belong to Moriah.

With our busy schedules, we do our best to attend the church service; caregroup, and other means of fellowships. Needless to say, Moriah church played a big role to our marriage and now our married life. I reborn my Christian faith in Moriah; and during our wedding ceremony, our Moriah family helped us and our Pastor Simon officiated our wedding.

As we grow, age, and continue our walk of life, we need a church. We need a church family that will walk with us in growing our faith and experience God in our lives. Experience God, experience Jesus, experience the Holy Spirit.

Last June 2013 I attended my very first church camp through Moriah in Phuket Thailand. With God’s financial blessings, me and my husband able to listen and further grown our faith through the church.

Our Moriah family. Church camp 2013 in Phuket, Thailand

My husband with our youth Amanda

While the kids were busy admiring the beauty of nature..

The camp is very active.

And the kids are attentive to the game masters..

We were divided to teams where camaraderie starts to kick in!

Excellent service! Where we held our camp…

Our Moriah Youths graced us with their talents for dancing…

The fun and laughter where all generation gaps were forgotten..

And here’s another one..

Our youths happy faces..

A game is a competition regardless of age.. Uncle Alan showing off with his moves..

The church camp may have last only for few days but what we’ve learned and experienced was a leap of faith. Science cannot disprove God’s existence. The more we resist spirituality, the more unhappy we become.

Leading back to our question, What is your purpose in life? It’s simply being happy. But we dragged ourselves in societal norms and rat-race competition that we wined up living a complicated and overstretch life. We forget to appreciate the beauty of nature and the people surrounding us. We stopped growing personally and spiritually.

If you want to be happy, start putting smile in your face when you wake up each morning. Paired it up with a silent gesture of giving ‘Thanks!’. I always believe that we could have just died in our sleep but God gave us another morning to be with our loved ones. Accept that you cannot control life and you need God to be with you. If you have a Christian friend whom you have constantly rejected the invitation, why not give it a chance?

If you’re a fellow Christian and feels hungry for God’s words, you can always open your stashed and dusty Bible in your home. Alternatively, through smart phones, electronic Bible are in various digital application stores –> the word of God is always within reach.

As for me and my husband, our faith, like our lives… is a constant journey. We’re walking by faith. And we’re walking by Moriah.

As we wanted to share it to everyone, if you feel the need to be connected to a church, feel free to join us in our worship every Sunday in Golden Village Cinema, Vivo City, Harbourfront Singapore from 10AM – 12PM.

Til next time. Au revoir.

“God will provide”

Disclaimer: This article is a living testimony of how God provides as we put our faith and trust in Him. This article do not insinuate negativity towards the entities mentioned in this blog.

My hubby Gnex and I just attended our caregroup session (Moriah Assembly of God) last saturday. We had a very interesting discussion.

Faith in God leads to trust and obedience. Three key words complementing each: Faith, trust, and obedience towards God.

We’ve shared our own testimony which happened recently:

After my hubby and I got married on my birthday, it is to our hearts intent to stay in my husband’s workplace. Teen Challenge has been an instrument for us to meet, started our dating, and later on settled down. My hubby Gnex has a biggest bond with Teen Challenge, God’s ministry close to his heart. It is where he started anew, it is where God touched his heart and reformed, it is where we had our Christian wedding ceremony.

We professed our intention to be living staff to Teen Challenge; that I can stay with my husband while he’s serving the ministry. We prayed that our heart’s desire will be granted. After series of conversation in different forms, we finally had the response. Our request to stay in Teen Challenge was declined. We were never informed of the reason. Our hearts were crushed.

Christmas of 2012 came. With our low morale, we decided to accept things as they are and searched for our rental space. We took it as a message that ‘This is what God wants. And so be it Lord.’

Christmas is all about giving and sharing our blessings. Instead of lingering towards what happened, we decided to serve God and shared our blessings to the residents of Teen Challenge. My husband’s passion is to serve the people. We had the Christmas pot-luck, thanks to other fellow staffs who contributed and the residents experienced their exchange-gifts. We felt happy and fulfilled in the end. I remember telling my husband, “This Christmas I missed my family; but the emptiness was fulfilled by seeing the residents happy.”

After Christmas we were busy hunting for our own rental space. As the Singapore property market is a big boom, the rental space has tremendously increased as well. We were faced with the challenge of finding the fund for the first set of cash out – the deposit, the advance, the agent’s fee. We have to be practical, we have just got married; most of our cash flows were out. I saw my husband spending late nights to scout for affordable room rental which will fit our budget while I was busy with work as we were on year end closing for 2012. We didn’t manage to find a room rent. We grew tired and weary; and so we leave it all to God. We took a break and rested.

Out of no-where a miracle happened. God blessed and provided us with a room-rental which we considered to be affordable as compared to others. And God blessed and provided us with the fund as well to pay for everything – the deposit, the advance, and the agent’s fee. Very unexpected, truly a blessing.

True enough, God see and help us through. No matter what circumstances it is, God is always there to help and guide us.

Our friends, we hope that our simple testimony will provide enlightenment to your life. It maybe simple but the most important point is your truly reliance to God in everything that you do.

In the upcoming days, we will be settled to our rental place.

And now, whenever we feel doubt, we always give the affirmation that ‘No worries, as long as our hearts are in-lined with God; God will provide and God will see and help us through.’

After truly relying to God, obeyed, strengthen our trust and faith, we started to see God’s blessings in uncountable ways.

A Match Made in Heaven

Finding ‘The One’ wasn’t a smooth sailing journey.

It took a while before we found each other.

I wrote about him last April 2012. It was my last post and went silence in my blog.

A lot of things had happened. We got engaged.

We decided to tie-the-knot on September 1, 2012.

Yes, the very day of my birthday and so does my dad who passed away 19 years ago.

Wedding Day…
My mother’s kiss on my wedding day…

Now, I’m married to my hubby Gnex Ganesan and will be celebrating our first Christmas few days from now.

From hotel to our church…
Wedding ceremony…
Wedding ceremony…

God does has His way of making us meet. We meet in an unexpected place. While I wasn’t searching, I didn’t close any doors in finding that someone.. that someone I’m going to spend the rest of my life with…

And so he came… All the while searching for me… And he didn’t even knew it, until we met and became exclusive.

My husband.. Gnex Ganesan…

Our officiating pastor.. Reverend Simon Ang..

Oftentimes we busy ourselves as an escape of the fear to be with someone. After all the pains, the issues of trust, we decided to just be with ourselves and give up in finding ‘the one’.

Love…

But what if… what if… God is giving you ‘the one’… but you were looking somewhere else… or you were too busy you didn’t realise?

Reflections…
Us…

I hope you will find that someone for you… Someone who will be with you when you wake each morning.. Someone you will argue with the TV remote control… Someone you will kiss when your glad.. Someone who you will make up and make out with after arguments… That someone who will hold your hand until your hair turns grey, the teeth will loose, the blurry sight.. and until you close your eyes and joint your Creator…

My niece and my mother on our wedding day…
Our wedding guest speaker… Reverend Sam Kuna…
We held our wedding in Teen Challenge Singapore…
My mum-in-law.. Ma Maliga..
Mother and daughter..
Our witnesses…
Our family.. our friends.. our pride..
Our cake and cupcakes.. by Sweettooth cake delights..

Time to say goodbye.. Goodbye to singlehood.. Goodbye to the endless and tiring search..

And it’s welcome… to the married life.. to companionship.. to family.. and to eternity..

Til next time..Au revoir..

Of Faith. Of Hope. Of Love.

I started drafting this article last February 14, 2012. I’d like to talk love as suits the occasion of Valentine’s day. I’m always mesmerized of my parents love story. So my Valentine’s day is always dedicated to my parents. Second to the fact that it also falls on my mother’s natal day.

February 14th is a scheduled date with Gnex. Sadly, he fell sick. We barely knew each other that time. However, there is an attraction and chemistry. That we can’t deny.

I tried to finish the article.. No matter how hard I tried, I wasn’t able to. Like any artist, I wasn’t inspired. I didn’t have my muse.

Life went on as usual. I was succumb to the mundane of life and busy schedule. Gladly, Gnex stayed. We started to get to know each other better. And we didn’t stop. We decided to have faith. We decided to place God in the midst.

Love as they say is as perennial as the grass. That’s according to my favorite Poem – Desiderata.

Love grows in unexpected places…

love is always a surprise….

its a treasure to be found..

it’s a gift to embrace…

~ Chic Pencil

I held on to my faith. I held on to God I know. I followed where I was leading to.

Gnex surprised me. He did surprise me a lot. It started as a friendship, getting to know each other, dates,  and it grew… We followed where God is bracing us to… We never questioned, we were always grateful and appreciative.

As we walk on to the next road of our relationship, we have our hands clasps together. There will always be winds that will try to change the course. However, we have God that will calm the sea during its storm.

And finally, I can finish this article. With tears of joy in my eyes, I can publish it and share it with family and friends.

It all started with FAITH by placing God in the midst.. Relying to God’s hands and believing His will.

It’s followed with HOPE. And to never giving up.

And it ended up with LOVE…

Of faith. Of hope. and Of Love.

Love is patient love is kind. It does not envy, it does not boast, it is not proud. It does not dishonor others, it is not self seeking, it is not easily angered, it keeps no record of wrongs. Love does not delight in evil but rejoices with the truth. It always protects, always trusts, always hopes, always perseveres.

1 corinthians 13:4-7

And lastly… to the love of my life…

I love you Gnex…

A Blessed Lenten season to my fellow Catholics and Christians in faith…

Blessed Sunday

Sunday has always been known as the Sabbath day – a day of rest. Though different regions have different day of rest, at least one day of the week is dedicated for the soul. A day of faith and spirituality. A day dedicated for our Creator.

No matter how busy we are in our daily schedule, the Sabbath day should be observed.

Have a blessed Sabbath day everyone.

Food Blog Singapore: Sin Kee Famous Chicken Rice (Mei Chin Road)

Chicken rice is one of the all time favorite dish in Singapore.

During my first visit to Singapore while implementing an IT project last 2004, my Singapore counterparts have introduced me to this dish. Later on I see myself getting hooked on eating chicken rice.

Chicken rice preparation involves boiling the entire chicken from the chicken and bone stock. The rice is cooked from the chicken stock as well. However, the chicken stock used for the rice cooking is different from the former chicken stock. The stock used for rice cooking involves production of oily chicken stock to make the rice rich in flavor.

There are a lot of known best chicken rice shops in Singapore. One of them is the Sin Kee Famous Chicken Rice which I came to know due to my colleagues – Jeffrey & Chee Yong. Previously, this chicken rice shop is located in Margaret Drive. The shop has then relocated and is now posted in Mei Ling Market and Food Centre in Mei Chin Road.

Coming from Queensway Road, Mei Chin Road is before reaching Alexandra Road.

At the Alexandra junction is IKEA. If you see Ikea, and you’re coming from Queensway, it simply means you missed Mei Chin Road. Lol.

This is Sin Kee Famous Chicken Rice shop at Mei Ling Market and Food Centre.

This is Sin Kee’s Chicken Rice. As of this writing, the solo chicken rice cost SGD 3.00. White chicken rice is offered by Sin Kee. I believe they do not serve other than which chicken rice.

One of the good combination of chicken rice is the hawker center’s home-made Ice Lemon Tea.

Sin Kee Famous chicken rice also serves porridge. I haven’t tried the porridge offering; probably one of the upcoming days I can taste the famous porridge.

Dragon Year 2012 Lo Hei

Working in Singapore exposes a foreigner for variety of cultures. As we all know, Singapore comprises of three races: Chinese, Malay, and Indian. With these three races in harmony, the propensity of racial and culinary fusion is inevitable.

Each year, mostly in the earlier part, Singaporean celebrates the Chinese Lunar New Year. Each year corresponds to a Chinese animal zodiac which symbolizes the Chinese Lunar calendar culminating a 12 – year cycle. The 12-year period belongs to the 12 different animals (Rat, Ox, Tiger, Rabbit, Dragon, Snake, Horse, Goat, Monkey, Rooster, Dog, & Pig) . Chinese culture believes that people belonging to each animals exhibits the same pattern or set of behaviours. The animals would symbolize the compatibility and which animal would show a sign of good luck for the current year.

The Chinese lunar new year celebration would last for 15 days beginning from the start of the new year. It is during this time when the Chinese would commence the family visits, gatherings, dinners, and the like. Hong baos or red pockets given by the married Chinese are of abundance at this time of the year. Businesses will definitely celebrate the good will and the good start of the Chinese lunar new year.

Lo Hei or Prosperity Toss is prominent this time of the year.

This year is the Year of the Dragon – 2012.

For the last couple of years, I had the chance to experience the Lo Hei celebration – Malaysia and Singapore combined. It is a jolly gathering and tossing as it is said that you have to have a wish during your toss and the higher the toss, the greater the chance of making your wish possible! (Wink!). Sometimes, it is your friends who will wish for you during the Lo hei (tossing)!

During the Lo hei celebration, you will be served with Yusheng (it is also called Yee Sang). It is a very colorful raw fish salad with shredded vegetables, oils, etc. It is served in big plates with a longer chopsticks which is used during the tossing.

You will notice there are 2 chopsticks in this picture. The chopsticks in the most right of image is the longer chopsticks used in the tossing celebration.

The Mandarin oranges are present everywhere during Chinese new year. Mandarin Oranges symbolizes good fortune and abundance. In a traditional manner, the Teochew delicacies are served in this restaurant.

This is the colorful Yee Sang. When served, the celebrants would wait for everybody in the table to be present before the ceremony begins.

When the ceremony starts, other ingredients will be added to the Yee Sang. While the hostess is pouring the ingredients, she recites the ingredients and the symbol of such. Ofcourse, all languages spoken are in Mandarin…

Once the Yee Sang ceremony is finished, the prosperity tossing will begin. There can be loud noises depending on the crowd celebration – that is the Lo Hei event…

After the tossing is complete, the proper meal will be served. And this time, traditional tea will be poured unlimited.

The unlimited pouring of tea…

You will be served with the set of meal catered for the event.

All in the menu is served. Do not be worry on your diet… the food in the menu is served in a conservative amount… (wink).

Wishing a prosperous Dragon Year to all!

Til next time. Au revoir.

Social Media And YOU

As of yesterday September 7th, the world population is estimated at 6.9 billion. Surprisingly, the number of mobile phones across the globe is not far behind. According to Wikipedia, mobile phones population across the globe is approximately over 5 billion.

The battle in the mobile world has upraised during the last decade. Whilst ten years ago, owning a personal mobile phone was restricted to the upper class of the society, today, a mobile phone is but a commodity. In Singapore, you can observe that the working class population, an individual within the range of monthly income of SGD 2,000 (+/- 10%) owns at least 2 mobile phones.

In China, the mobile subscribers population is approximately at 1.3 billion and the mobile phone population is at 900 millions. India is not far behind with a 1.2 billion subscribers and 850 millions mobile phones.

The fragmented competition for the mobile industry paved the way to the various mobile phone operating systems – Apple’s iOS, Google’s Android, RIM’s Blackberry OS 7, Samsung Bada, the good old Symbian, Palm’s WebOS, etc.

Aside from the mobile phone operating systems, the stiff market competition gave the pressure for the mobile phone operators to be at its best. It also has created a key trend in 2011, that is the social media networks.

In social media networks, the consumers are analyzed based on their mobile phone behavior and their location based patterns. The numbers that you frequently dialed from your mobile phone is being understood by analysts paving the way to creation of various social media models in order to provide you with the best mobile subscription package that fits your lifestyle.

Location based services on the other hand, analyses the places that you frequently visits. In countries like Indonesia, Philippines, Thailand, and even Malaysia, you will notice that a change in your location gives the way for the various advertisings that targets your location. Sometimes, just entering the malls, you will be bombarded with various SMS or text messages from mall boutiques giving away discounts or sales.

Aside from the purely telecommunications social media analysis, mobile applications are also being used for majority of consumer based study. Twitter (http://www.twitter.com) is one of the key source of social media information. It is said that Twitter gave the consumers ‘the freedom of speech’. Hotel and tourism reviews mobile apps (Tripadvisor, Kayak, etc) are also a major contributor for the said study. Foursquare (http://foursquare.com) uses the location based approach in terms of social media. For the businesses, location based marketing paves the way to understanding the location patterns giving the consumers the based packages and promotions that suit their travel, shopping, dining lifestyle, and the like.

While there are a lot of advantages of social media, the major downside of social media networks is the consumer privacy. It can sometimes be exploit and can be used against a consumer for variety of reasons.

As always, I always mention that if you don’t want to be traced and searched, the best way to do so is to turn off thy mobile phone. However, these days not using a mobile phone is like living in the prehistoric stone age.

In our modern world, the business and technology keeps on innovating in order to thrive. And in order to compete and thrive is to give the best to the market audience.

And that is YOU.

Sexaholics – Are You One Of Them?

Some of us has already come across the word “Sexaholic or Sexaholics”, a term that correlates to sexual fixation. A fix to addiction via sexual activities.

Like any other addiction, a sexaholic behaves the same; when the urge starts to kick in, the sexual fix needs to be satisfied.

Though the sexaholic statistics still remains a mystery, most of the known sexaholics are from the male gender. Yes. Men. I believe it boils down on how the male species are genetically wired and how men and women are being perceived by the society. Famous names who were rumored to be under the treatment of sex addictions were: Tiger Woods, David Duchovny, Michael Douglas, Charlie Sheen, among others.

How can a person become a sexaholic?

The difference between sex addiction and the other variations of addictions (drugs and alcohols) is the method of acquisition. Drug and alcohol addiction would involve a certain threshold and a dependency to an object. It all starts with small amounts of drugs (cough syrup, heroin, etc) until the tolerance increases and addiction kicks in.

Sexual addiction on the other hand does not involve tolerance and no dependency either. Sexual desires emanates from the brain. A desire can lead to a strong sexual fantasy and the search for sexual partners kicks in. Sexual partners can be anyone, it can even lead to paying dominatrices. There is no object dependencies in this manner; for sexual addiction, it is all in the a person’s mind.

In this sense, there is a fine line between sexual addiction and the regular sexual desires. Sexual desires become sexaholism will all depend on the reasons why sexual activities satisfy the cravings or the fix. For a sexaholic, when the sexual cravings are satisfied, he/she becomes a better person, accepted, everything becomes a better world. The same cravings will happen again and the same satisfaction is justified.

Most common cause of sexaholism is depression, a struggle within a person’s internal self when a person feels rejection. Like any other addiction, the basic need of approval and acceptance is still the core of a sexaholic’s wants, needs, and desires.

Sexaholism is all about the person and the society. Unfortunately, there are norms, culture, and tradition that is being shaped by society and the judgement to sexaholics can become a downside to a sexaholic’s acceptance of the problem and the acceptance to undergo therapy or medication.

How can you tell if you’re a sexual addict?

There are various societal groups that are willing to help for sexaholics recovery. An alternative and probably the best way is to speak to a psychologist or your shrink.

Online quizzes are also available in order for a person to recognize if there’s a hint of sexual addiction:

http://www.addicted.com/addiction-resources/self-tests/sex-addiction-quiz

Everyone deserves second chances. Recovering from sexaholism is more challenging as it requires a mind and self control. However, it still begins with acceptance of the problem and moving on to recovery with a healthy and happy support system.

While most of us lives in accordance and acceptance by society, we must understand, accept and support those loved ones whom undergone a cop-out, or even a Freudian cop-out.

Singapore National Day Parade Rehearsal – Fireworks Display July 16 2011

Majulah!  – the word originated from Bahasa Melayu meaning – ‘Go forward’ or ‘Move forward’ has always been popular in Singapore during its National Day which dates August 9th. The word majulah is also known for Singapore’s anthem – ‘Majulah Singapura’ which translates to ‘Onward Singapore’.

Since Singapore’s national day is just around the corner, every weekend is a practice for many Singaporeans to showcase their parades, songs, among others to show tribute to their nation.

One amazing portion of the national day rehearsals is Singapore’s fireworks display which magnetizes many photo enthusiasts to capture the wildly array of colors in the lens of their camera.

I’m one of those photo enthusiasts. Even though I’m unfamiliar of using my Nikon D200 camera for this scene, I went to the fireworks rehearsal armed with my camera, a remote control, a tripod, a friend who is another photography geek, and lastly, a courage and hope that I can shoot the fireworks displays at least with a clear picture quality.

We’re lucky enough to take a place opposite the Marina Bay Sands where the fireworks are going to be held.

Marina Bay Sands Singapore

Here’s the photo set for this fireworks rehearsal.

I went to the fireworks rehearsal totally unprepared. But my camera somehow didn’t fail me.

I love my Nikon D200. 🙂
